Stevie Wonder Lesson | Classical and Bluegrass Exercises

May 6, 2015 by Jeremy Casey Leave a Comment

Stevie Wonder’s Master Blaster (Jammin’) has always been a personal favorite of mine. Stevie’s take on reggae has a combination of great horn parts over an unforgettable groove. Justin Sandercoe has created a guitar arrangement for the song that becomes a really fun lesson to play around with.

Bluegrass Speed: Learn how to utilize crosspicking to play up tempo flatpicking licks. Jake Stephens will show you how to pick through chord shapes using a down-down-up or alternate picking pattern.

Classical Guitar Exercises: Our first practice session on playing tremolos will teach the basics of this essential technique. By playing a note three times in a row on the same string, you can create a shimmering sound.  In our follow up video, we’ll use a planting technique to develop more speed and control with tremolos.

Learn to Play Lead-In Runs

February 29, 2012 by Jeremy Casey Leave a Comment

When playing bluegrass rhythm guitar, one of the essential concepts is using lead-in or bass note runs. This involves using a series of notes to link two chords together. So you might be strumming a G chord and then play two notes leading into a bass note strum on C. Our newest free lesson by David Ellis will show you seven different ways to accomplish this using G, C, and D chords. Check out the tabs for more info.

Easy Flatpicking Guitar Lesson: Old Joe Clark & Wildwood Flower

February 15, 2011 by Jeremy Casey Leave a Comment

We have a new lesson for bluegrass guitar beginners. This lesson is the first guitar lesson David Ellis has done for our site after previously creating our Beginning Dobro lessons. The premium download features easy arrangements of the bluegrass standards Wildwood Flower and Old Joe Clark. David starts by reviewing the chord progressions for each song and then teaches you how to play the single note melody lines. This is a great introduction to playing bluegrass and will help the less experienced guitarist move from playing rhythm toward flatpicking leads. Check out the Easy Flatpicking Songs 1 page for more details.
